M\u00e1s de 75 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, sus palabras siguen contando con una incontestable vigencia. Nos recuerda Salinas que la universidad es el espacio social en que el ser humano se forma para el mundo y la vida responsable, en que adquiere mucho m\u00e1s que un conocimiento t\u00e9cnico para el desempe\u00f1o de una profesi\u00f3n, en que se impregna de los valores imperecederos que debe cuidar con celo la universidad: verdad y justicia, el amor por las ideas, el respeto al conocimiento como tarea ancestral y responsabilidad de la especie humana, y el gusto por el trabajo bien hecho, (sea cual sea su naturaleza). De paso, Salinas hace una defensa a ultranza del eterno estudiante, ese que est\u00e1 altamente motivado y experimenta con atenci\u00f3n el alumbramiento de su conciencia a la complejidad del mundo y de las relaciones humanas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Abstract<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In the 1940s the great love poet Pedro Salinas delivered two conferences in Puerto Rico. They dealt with the social function of University and the role of the archetypal university student. 75 years later, his words remain true despite the passage of time. Salinas reminds us that University happens to be the social space where human beings are educated to become responsible citizens of the world and where they acquire much more than simple technical knowledge to fulfill the requirements of any job with self-efficacy. University is that social space par excellence where humans learn the meaning of ancestral values such as truth and justice, love of ideas, respect for knowledge as a collective enterprise that must be accomplished by the human species, and the desire to do any activity to the highest standard of performance (regardless of its nature).
