Abstract

The Official Schools of Languages play an essential role in teaching languages to different sectors of society, as well as in approaching other cultures and offering the opportunity to learn less studied languages. This article describes the historical context of their creation and the socio-educational context of their evolution. It tackles the creation in 1911 of the Central School of Languages in Madrid, a pioneer in the teaching of languages in the Spanish public education system, and the stem of the current Official Schools of Languages. Details such as the teacher selection procedure, the salary, the setting and the facilities, some of the well-known students and the situation during the Civil War and the post-war period are described. This will serve as a basis to analyse the evolution of the Official Schools of Languages in general and of those of Andalusia in particular.
